Booker at the Beck Indoor Picnic with Entertainment by Local Historian & Occasional D.J. Bob Booker
Saturday, August 16, 2008, 6:30 p.m.
32 guests, $60 per person
Morningside, 1927 Dandridge Avenue
Come dressed for an air-conditioned old fashioned picnic in the recently remodeled Beck Cultural Exchange Center, Knoxville’s repository of artifacts related to the rich heritage of the local African-American community. We’ll begin with cocktails, appetizers (okra pancakes and pickled shrimp) and tours of the center. On display are photographs of the area in East Knoxville destroyed by Urban Renewal in the 1960s and events that took place during the civil rights struggle of the same period. Founded in 1975 and named in honor of local African-American philanthropists James and Ethel Beck, the center is located in an Arts and Crafts Style house built in 1910 by James Cowan for his wife Alice Saxton. During and after supper Bob Booker will act as D.J. with “Oldies but Goodies” from his extensive collection of vinyl records: 33s, 45s, and even some 78s.
