A Place at the Table: A New Century for Knoxville Women
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, join us on November 19 at 6 PM for an engaging lecture with Dr. Patricia Rutenberg exploring the remarkable women who helped shape Knoxville in the early 20th century.
This lecture examines the challenges Knoxville women faced as they forged new paths in the arts, education, activism, and civic life. The lecture highlights the lives and accomplishments of artists Catherine Wiley and Adelia Armstrong Lutz, who became influential members of Knoxville’s Nicholson Art League; clubwoman Mary Boyce Temple, one of the first Southern women to attend Vassar College; activist Lillian Cansler, who worked for racial justice; and educator Lizzie Crozier French, who joined many of these women in the fight for women’s suffrage.
Together, their stories reveal how Knoxville women challenged expectations, expanded opportunities, and helped shape a new century for their community. Experience this special evening of history, storytelling, and reflection as we celebrate Knoxville’s women and their enduring contributions to our city.
