$50/person - September 27 Fundraiser for Farragut Birthplace

David Glasgow Farragut was the first full admiral of the United States Navy. He is recognized around the world as one of the great naval leaders of all time. His father, Jorge Farragut, was a Spanish merchant captain from the island of Minorca who came to America in 1776 and fought in the Revolution. He received a land grant for his service, becoming one of Knoxville’s first settlers. David Farragut was born in a log house on the banks of the river at the Lowe’s Ferry crossing, which is about a mile west of the Northshore/Pellissippi interchange. The Daughters of the Revolution marked the site of Farragut’s birth with a large monument in 1900. This monument still stands on private property, but it is bordered on two sides by county parkland that is slated for development into a greenway. The archaeological study needs to be done before work can begin on the park.

In 2010, Knox Heritage listed the Birthplace of Admiral Farragut on its annual Fragile Fifteen list of endangered places in Knox County.  To read more about the site and efforts to preserve the landmark, read more here.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation highlighted the preservation struggle on its website in February.  Margot Kline's blog highlights the national significance of Farragut and his birthplace in west Knox County.  Read the full blog post here.
