KNOX HERITAGE’S LUNCH SERIES, “LOST & FOUND,” WELCOMES DON BARGER, AUGUST 20, 2009

Barger Speaks About Establishment of Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Knox Heritage continues its series of educational lunches, Lost & Found, on Thursday, August 20, with special guest Don Barger from the National Parks Conservation Association (NCPA).  Mr. Barger, Senior Regional Director of NPCA’s Southeast Region, will discuss how the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was a unique and significant milestone set against the backdrop of the early conservation movement and the founding of the National Park Service.

Lost and Found is held at The Foundry, 747 World’s Fair Park Drive, in downtown Knoxville.  Parking is free.  A lunch buffet will be served at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 12:00 p.m.  The cost of the buffet is $10.00 for Knox Heritage and NPCA members and $15.00 for non-members.  Advance reservations are required for those partaking in the buffet.  To make reservations, call 523-8008 no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 17.

Don Barger founded NPCA’s Southeast Regional Office in 1992. His work in the region since that time has resulted in a groundswell of public attention to the issue of air pollution at Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  Mr. Barger shepherded a joint petition by NPCA and the City of Middlesboro, KY, which resulted in protection of the Fern Lake watershed adjacent to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.  In another watershed nearby, Don was instrumental in stopping a proposal for a water supply dam upstream of the Obed Wild and Scenic River, forcing local utility districts into regional planning, and creating an ongoing Eastern Steams program that has set important precedents at the Buffalo National River and elsewhere.

NPCA’s mission is to protect and enhance America’s National Parks for present and future generations.  For over 90 years, NPCA has been the citizen voice for National Parks, dedicated solely to protecting, preserving and funding these great places – America’s National Parks.
