Writer & Historian To Discuss Urban Renewal In Knoxville

Knox Heritage welcomes Robert J. Booker as the guest speaker for the next installment of its “Lunch & Learn” series on Thursday, February 7. Mr. Booker will speak about the history of urban renewal in Knoxville and its impact on the African-American community. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.

“Lunch & Learn” is held at The Foundry on the Fair Site, 747 World’s Fair Park Drive. Parking is free. A lunch buffet will be served at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 12:00 p.m. The cost of the buffet is $10.00 for Knox Heritage members and $15.00 for non-members. Advance reservations are required for those partaking in the buffet. To make reservations, call 523-8008 no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5.

Robert Booker is a Knoxville native and graduate of Austin High School and Knoxville College. Mr. Booker was executive director of the Beck Cultural Exchange Center for sixteen years, and he organized the Austin High Alumni Association which recently celebrated the 125th anniversary of the school.

A regular columnist for the News Sentinel, Mr. Booker also wrote for the Knoxville Journal and has authored several books, including Two Hundred Years of Black Culture In Knoxville, Tennessee, 1791 – 1991 and The Heat of a Red Summer.
