On the Move:
214 E. Glenwood Takes a Trip

On Monday, May 1st, the first day of Preservation Month, Knox Heritage moved the home at 214 E. Glenwood Avenue out of the path of the SmartFix 40 highway project. The house was moved to an adjacent lot and is available for purchase and restoration. This is the first project for Knox Heritage's J. Allen Smith Endangered Properties Fund.

The home was built in 1924 and was home to Miss Iva Vance and her family from 1936 until Knox Heritage purchased the home in 2005 to help her save it from demolition. The Craftsman style home was surrounded by other bungalow neighbors at the time it was built, but the original construction of Interstate 40 left it as the lone survivor in its block. After the move it will stand proudly amongst its new neighbors on Glenwood Avenue, adjacent to the historic 4th & Gill neighborhood.

The home retains almost all of its original features, including hardwood floors, unpainted woodwork and a fireplace. After being moved to its new location, Knox Heritage plans to replace the roof and install new electrical, plumbing and heat and air systems before making it available for a new owner to complete the restoration.

Knox Heritage's J. Allen Smith Endangered Properties Fund provides effective alternatives to demolition or neglect of historic buildings by promoting their rehabilitation and enabling endangered historic properties to connect with buyers who will rehabilitate them. The fund allows Knox Heritage to accept property donations, purchase endangered historic properties, or purchase options on those properties. In some cases it will allow Knox Heritage to stabilize and /or make improvements to purchased properties in order to increase their marketability. The properties will then be marketed to locate buyers who agree to preserve and maintain the structures. Protective covenants will be attached to the deeds to ensure the historic integrity of each property is retained, and purchasers will be required to sign rehabilitation agreements based on the work to be performed on the structure.
